Thomas Wilson Beaty, being one of the representatives of Horry District, was a signer of the Ordinance of Secession on December 17, 1860. One of the leading merchants of Conwayborough and Horry District, he also practiced law and was the editor and publisher of The Horry News. He was a member of the Soldiers' Board of Relief, a member of the S.C. House of Representatives and was a member of the S.C. Senate from 1880-1884.
