Interesting Facts -
Just before the outbreak of hostilities known as the Confederate War, Charles LeRoy Johnson moved to Conwayborough, South Carolina. He joined up to fight for the Southern Confederacy on June 26, 1861 in the village of Conwayborough. Johnson was appointed as 1st Sgt. by Judson D. Grissette on Sept 21, 1862. In a letter written by Johnson from Delevan Hospital in Charlottesville, Virginia, dated June 30, 1864, Johnson states, "When a Sergeant in Co. L 7th SC Regt on the 6th day of May, 1864 at field hospital my left leg was amputated by Surgeon Horton below the knee on account of compound comminuted fracture received in the Service of the Confederate States at Battle of the Wilderness on the 6th day of May 1864."
