Interesting Facts -James Vault was originally part of the 4th Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, an African-American infantry regiment that served in the Union Army. The 4th South Carolina Infantry was organized at Fernandina, Florida and mustered into Federal service in July 1863. The regiment was consolidated with 3rd S.C. to form the 21st U.S. Colored Infantry Regiment on March 14, 1864. He served in Jacksonville, Florida until April 1864, then moved to Hilton Head Island, then to Folly Island and Morris Island. James was discharged on Surgeon’s Certificate of Disability at Morris Island, SC on June 17, 1864.
