Waccamaw Records
A Statement of Purpose
by
Ashley P. Cox, Jr. and Catherine H. Lewis
Both of the partners in this enterprise have been engaged in one way or another in research in Horry County (SC) history for more than 30 years, so we know from experience the difficulty faced by those who try to trace families who lived in the Waccamaw region. Now that both of us are retired, we have decided to join forces to make Horry County records more readily available for family research.
Ashley Patterson Cox, Jr., whose parents migrated from Horry County to Georgia more than sixty years ago, has had a long career in journalism and child care. He was most recently administrator of the Georgia Industrial Home in Macon. For years he has accumulated records related to the Cox, Todd, Patterson, Marlow and related families and maintained an extensive correspondence with others similarly engaged.
Catherine Heniford Lewis was for nearly 28 years county librarian (i.e., director) of the Horry County Memorial Library headquartered in Conway, SC. A charter member of the Horry County Historical Society, she has been associated for many years with The Independent Republic Quarterly, established in 1967 by the Society, as an editor and contributor. She has written and lectured frequently on the history of the county. She has assisted many people to get family research in Horry County
started.
PREFACE
Those who have attempted family research in Horry County know well the difficulty of locating vital statistics before the state of South Carolina began to record births and deaths officially in 1913. While I was county librarian I began to abstract records of deaths and marriages from the newspapers which are on microfilm in the Horry County Memorial Library collection. These are the only known Horry newspaper files from the 19th century. Copies of the microfilm are available both at the headquarters library in Conway, SC, and in the collections of the Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
The obituary notices rarely appear as such, but as news notes from correspondents in various communities around Horry County. They are not in any particular section of the paper, but appear on the pages devoted to local happenings. It is, therefore, difficult to find them and the information varies considerably with the correspondent contributing it for publication.
I have made every attempt to find every death notice and have checked the information a second time for accuracy, but I cannot guarantee that some obituary might not have been missed.
A few notices appear from other sources, such as the Southern Christian Advocate, which are not in the HCML collection. Consult your local library for information about where files of this publication can be found.
Please note that I have made no attempt to correct any information which appeared in the newspapers. This may result in occasional misspellings, etc., but they are cited exactly as they appeared.
The Horry County Health Department keeps death certificates for the last five years only. The fee for a copy is $5.00. The South Carolina Bureau of Vital Statistics in Columbia has files from 1915 and now the SC Department of Archives and History has some of these records on microfilm.
I hope that this compilations will prove useful and encouraging to those who want to trace their Horry County roots.
